Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf Bullion Coin
General Coin Information
The Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf Bullion Coin was initially launched by the Royal Canadian Mint in 1988. Produced from 99.95% pure platinum, they feature the same maple leaf design as its gold and silver counterparts.
The platinum maple leafs were available in several sizes yearly until 1999, when the price of the precious metal increased, and therefore the demand for the bullion coin decreased. Accordingly, production of the coins was stopped. An extremely limited set of hologram coins were minted in 2002, and the platinum maple leafs were not seen again until 2009.
With their return, the platinum coins are only minted in the 1 oz size. Previous incarnations came in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz. One year even saw a 1/15 oz. version.
As the coins have been available for multiple years, the design of the obverse has changed to reflect an aging Queen Elizabeth II of England. Since the coins are legal tender, her image is required. The 1988-1989 coins had an image of the 39 year old queen. From 1990-2002, the coins obverse portrayed a 64 year old monarch. The 2009 image is of a 79 year old queen.
Production of these platinum bullion coins is based on demand.
Obverse Design
The obverse of the 2009 1 oz. coin features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, and includes the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II", "50 DOLLARS" and "2009".
Reverse Design
The reverse of the 2009 bullion coin depicts Canada's national emblem, an incredibly detailed maple leaf. "CANADA" is inscribed at the top, "9995" to the left and right of the leaf, and the words 'FINE PLATINUM ", "1 OZ" and "PLATINE PUR" underneath it.
