Canadian Silver Maple Leaf Bullion Coin
General Coin Information
The Canadian Silver Maple Leaf Bullion Coin was launched by the Royal Canadian Mint in 1988 and is issued yearly. Each Silver Maple Leaf Coin contains one ounce of 99.99% pure silver.
The Maple Leafs are the purist silver legal tender coins in the world and are guaranteed by the Government of Canada for weight and purity. They are also among the most internationally recognizable coins available in the market today.
Silver Maple Leafs came into being due to the success of its older sister coin with the same design -- the Gold Maple Leaf. (It's birth by demand is similar to story of the Austrian Philharmonic Silver Coin.)
The coin contains one troy ounce of silver, and is generally priced just a few dollars higher than the daily spot for the precious metal. The production level each year is based on demand with recent years experiencing extremely high mintages for the strikes.
Although produced with investors in mind, the coin's beauty has made it a favorite for coin collectors as well. Mintages of the strike were particularly low in 1997 and 1997, which has resulted in higher premiums for these years due to buying pressure from collectors.
Obverse Design
The obverse or heads side of the coin features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, and includes the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II", "5 DOLLARS" and year of issue.
Reverse Design
The reverse or tails side of the bullion coin depicts an incredibly detailed maple leaf, which is Canada's national emblem. "CANADA" is inscribed at the top, "9999" to the left and right of the leaf, and the words 'FINE SILVER", "1 OZ" and "ARGENT PUR" underneath it.
