Canadian Silver Maple Leaf Bullion Coin
General Coin Information
The Canadian Silver Maple Leaf Bullion Coin was launched by the Royal Canadian Mint in 1988 and is issued yearly. Containing one ounce of 99.99% fine silver, they are the purist silver legal tender coins in the world, and guaranteed by the Government of Canada for weight and purity. They are also among the most recognized coins worldwide.
The Silver Maple Leaf came into being due to the success of its older, sister coin with the same design -- the Gold Maple Leaf. (It's birth by demand is similar to story of the Austrian Philharmonic Silver Coin.)
The coin contains one troy ounce of silver, and is generally priced just a few dollars higher than the daily silver spot. Although minted with investors in mind, the coin's beauty has made it a favorite for coin collectors as well. Mintages were particularly low in 1997 and 1997, which has resulted in higher premiums for these years due to buying pressure from collectors.
The production level each year is based on demand, with recent years extremely high. Several million are sold annually.
Obverse Design
The obverse or heads side of the coin features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, and includes the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II", "5 DOLLARS" and year of issue.
Reverse Design
The reverse or tails side of the bullion coin depicts an incredibly detailed maple leaf, which is Canada's national emblem. "CANADA" is inscribed at the top, "9999" to the left and right of the leaf, and the words 'FINE SILVER", "1 OZ" and "ARGENT PUR" underneath it.
