The United States Mint is scheduled to release the 2010 Yosemite 5 Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin today. According to the US Mint, the strike will be available for ordering beginning at Noon (Eastern).
Today's launch was first indicated when the Mint added it to the Product Schedule late last month and was later confirmed by a press release issued on June 2, 2011. It marks the third issue of the extremely popular five ounce America the Beautiful series.
This series features obverse and reverse designs taken from the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program which debuted last year including reverse designs emblematic of selected sites of national interest - in this case Yosemite National Park of California.
The silver uncirculated coins more closely resemble the America the Beautiful Silver Bullion CoinTM Program, however, which also features designs taken from the quarter dollars. However, whereas the quarter dollars are typically struck from a clad composition and only feature a diameter of 0.955 inches, both these silver uncirculated coins and the associated bullion strikes are composed of five ounces of .999 fine silver and have the impressive diameter of three inches.
Yosemite Silver Bullion Coins made their debut late last year in December along with the other four 2010 strikes of the series which honored Hot Springs National Park, Yellowstone National Park, Grand Canyon National Park and Mount Hood National Forest. That late debut of the bullion coins was forced by difficulties experienced by the US Mint in initially producing the coins.
This difficulty meant the US Mint only had enough time to produce 33,000 of each of the 2010 America the Beautiful Bullion Coins before it turned its attention to the 2010-dated America the Beautiful Silver Uncirculated Coins. Of those, the US Mint only had enough resources to strike 27,000 per design before the end of the year.
The first of the 2010-dated Silver Uncirculated Coins which honored Hot Springs National Park was released by the US Mint on April 28, 2011. It was followed on May 17, 2011 with the release of the Yellowstone Silver Uncirculated Coin. Both of these strikes sold out within weeks of their release.
Which leads us to the debut of the third strike in the series - this Yosemite Silver Uncirculated Coin. As previously mentioned, only 27,000 will be available which will likely lead to a quick sell-out. The US Mint is offering the coins for $279.95 plus its standard shipping and handling charge of $4.95 per order.
Those wishing to purchase the strikes may do so directly from the US Mint beginning at Noon (Eastern) today by calling 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468) or via the Mint's website of www.usmint.gov.
